When Greg Smith first contacted us to brand a new beer project, we thought he was pulling our leg.
Every designer has some imaginary client that they dream about. When CODO Design got a call from Greg Smith, it all sounded too good to be true. Greg’s story starts with his great, great, great grandfather opening a brewery in Germany over 200 years ago. His son immigrated to the United States and opened a printing company which, several generations later, Greg now runs. After years of homebrewing, he was ready to bring professional brewing back into the family with Printer’s Ale Manufacturing Co.
“We worked with him to develop a strong identity, marrying a beautiful old Jobber press with graphic novels and just a skosh of punk rock. We designed his core lineup of beers to stand out in a crowded Georgia market; Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black are named after the inks that print shops use every day. Then, we designed and launched a fully-custom responsive website to help tell the Smith family story.”
PAMCo’S branding draws heavy inspiration from the beautiful visual vocabulary of printing-registration marks, halftones and all the lovely imperfections that can arise through the process.
I strongly encourage you to read CODO’s full write-up on this project, which includes further details and a look at the other direction that was pitched.
