Background
The Norwegian Juleøl (Christmas beer) beer with its distinctive dark taste is an important annual tradition in Norway. The beer is brewed by most of the breweries but each has it’s own secret recipe which is a closely guarded secret.

Challenge
The Grans brewery is a small, 3rd generation family brewery on the South East coast of Norway run by 3 brothers. They had brewed their own ‘Juleøl’ for many years but the packaging did not reflect the Christmas spirit and the brewery’s traditions.

Solution
The new design is inspired by classic Christmas films and the seasonal parties in the Grans brewery loft back when the Grans brothers were children. Grans Juleøl puts the magic back into Christmas through richly detailed illustrations, a style now mostly lost on Christmas beer packaging in Norway. A unique use of colour and hand drawn illustrations makes this packaging truly unique on the Norwegian market. The small details and surprises woven into the design also reflect the lighthearted nature of the brand, a hallmark of this family brewery.
